The Six-Year Program 

The University of Maryland's integrated Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency - M.D. program is a CODA accredited advanced specialty training experience that is six years in length.

The MD-OMFS program has had a revision to its curriculum.  This program has been approved by the medical school as well as by CODA.  It fulfills are the core requirements for graduation from the medical school as well as from an OMFS residency program.

Overview of the MD-OMFS Program

Year One:  The trainee will spend time between the SOM and Residency program.  They will be given credit for some medical school classes based on the courses taken in dental school.  During their medical school blocks (in red) they will be returning to OMFS to fulfill their ambulatory electives from SOM.  During the months on OMFS (in gold) they will be fulling SOM requirements in emergency medicine and Introduction to SOM/OMFS. 

Year Two: Is like Year one with a few exceptions.  Trainees will be complete some of their anesthesia requirement for SOM and OMFS residency.  There will be time given to complete USMLE STEP 1. 

Year Three: The trainee will be completely their clerkships for SOM graduation.  Time will be given to complete USMLE STEP 2.

Year 4:  Trainees will complete their Sub I in general surgery and plan for graduation from Medical School.  This year will also be dedicated to general surgery.

Year 5/6: Trainees are on the OMFS service for the last 24 months of their training.  The final 12 months the trainee will be a Chief Resident.

 

Rotations to other surgicenters and private offices are also available to provide supplemental training in esthetic surgery and practice management.
