The orthodontic graduate program at the University of Minnesota is a 24-month hybrid of didactic, clinical, and advanced technological excellence. We have six full-time faculty members along with about twice that number of adjunct (part-time) clinical instructors from the private practice community. Our facility boasts 24 dental chairs for 12 residents with one assistant for every three to four residents. The first year class typically starts around 60 patients and manages a patient load of about 130 patients in their second year.
One of our guiding principles is to endeavor to train our residents for the way they will practice in the future rather than to emphasize how orthodontics was practiced in the past. We apply the latest in technology, such as CBCT scans, digital models and charts, computer-aided treatment planning,TAD’s and soft tissue lasers. Graduating orthodontists are expected to submit the results of their research in the form of a publishable paper or a Master's Degree thesis.
Both first and second year residents receive funding to attend the annual A.A O. session each spring along with the G.O.R.P (graduate orthodontic resident program) meeting in the summer. The first year residents have the option to attend the annual Moyer's Symposium as well. The residents enjoy a regular rotation in the schools cleft lip/palate clinic, working with a team of specialist to treat patients with craniofacial disorders. Our residents also work closely with residents from graduate programs in pediatric dentistry and oral surgery. The Division of Orthodontics hosts the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents and faculty monthly in our Dentofacial Esthetics Conference discussing shared orthodontic/surgical orthognathic patients.
We intentionally select residents who are capable and willing to engage in collaborative learning and who can use their time efficiently. We strive to offer all the essentials plus more in this 24month program, so come prepared to take up the challenge!
