UNMC College of Dentistry General Practice Residency (GPR) Program

The UNMC General Practice Residency (GPR) program is designed for individuals seeking advanced training in delivering comprehensive health care in traditional dental environments, as well as in hospital and associated health care settings. Residents gain experience interacting with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team in a variety of clinical situations, with full consideration of the patient's dental and medical needs.

Residents refine their clinical skills through individualized training, taking into account their unique abilities, background, and career goals. The program also focuses on helping individuals develop practice management skills that are transferable to private practice.

The program is based at the Durham Outpatient Center in Omaha, and residents rotate to the Veterans Administration Western Iowa Nebraska Health Care System, which provides a second clinical and hospital training site, expanding the range of experiences available to residents.

Program Highlights

  • Intricately designed, hands-on residency experience.
  • One-on-one learning experiences with world-class faculty.
  • Supportive resident team.
  • Diverse patient base.

Program Goals

  • Develop the capacity in the generalist to participate in the provision of comprehensive health care in the traditional dental environment as well the hospital and associated health care settings.

  • Train a generalist capable of interacting with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team in a variety of health care situations including Services to the community.
  • Refine the clinical skills a generalist brings to the program, providing an opportunity to individualize certain aspects of training while taking into account varying abilities, background and career goals and by applying critical thinking principles, evidence/outcomes based care, and use of information databases in clinical decision making and practice management.
