The GPR program is a one year with optional second year program, fully accredited by the American Dental Association. Completion of the program results in the awarding of a Certificate of Completion.
The GPR Program includes rotations to specialized sites affiliated with the University of North Carolina. The clinical training sites for the program include the of the University of North Carolina Hospitals and School of Dentistry (2-3 months on the OMFS service, 2-3 months on the Special Care Dentistry/Hospital Oral Medicine rotation, and 2-3 months on the OR rotation) and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, N.C. (4-5 months). Additional rotations during the first year of the program include two weeks each on the UNC Anesthesiology Service and the Medicine Service at the Durham VAMC.
The optional second-year curriculum is designed to offer time in the outpatient and inpatient services at UNC Hospitals and on elective rotations. The second-year residents serve as Chief Residents for the program.
For academic year 2024-2025 we have 5 residents. Our plan for 2025-2026 is to enroll 5 residents in the first year curricula, with possibility of one resident in the optional second year curricula. This plan is expected to repeat for the 2026-2027 academic year, with possibility of one resident in the optional second year curricula.
