The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a four-year residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The residency program is the oldest west of the Mississippi and was founded in 1923 by Dr. Frances Reichmann. Since that time, the program has graduated many oral and maxillofacial surgeons who represent the University through their practices throughout the United States and foreign countries.

Our program is well balanced and at this time residents who have successfully completed the program have a greater than 90 percent pass rate on the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The program performs approximately 300 operating room cases per year, with an additional clinic load of 7000 patients. Residents perform between 600 and 700 IV sedation and outpatient general anesthetics, both at the College of Dentistry and the University Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic. The program currently provides a full scope of services, including the provision of care for greater than 90 percent of all facial trauma referred to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

In addition, we are involved in the dentofacial deformity program in the Department of Orthodontics and with the Department of Implantology. Research is actively conducted in the area of biomaterials and clinical outcomes of major oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.

Applicants must be eligible for Oklahoma state licensure and have completed a dental program accredited by the American Dental Association CODA, in addition to successful completion of Parts 1 and 2 of the National Boards. Advanced standing into the program is possible under certain circumstances and those are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The program at this time is 48 months in duration and is fully accredited through the American Dental Association. The program requires submission of an application to PASS and MATCH.
