Program Contact
The Department of Periodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry offers a 3-year graduate program in Periodontics leading to a Periodontics residency certificate & M.S. degree in Periodontics. This program is approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Graduate College and is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission of Dental Accreditation.
The focus of the program is to educate graduate students in clinical periodontics and relevant basic sciences as well as principles of scientific investigation. An original research project dissertation and thesis defense is required for completion of the Master’s of Science in Periodontics program.
The program provides a variety of clinical, didactic and research experiences. The clinical experiences available are broad based upon a large number of patients requiring periodontal care including replacement of missing teeth by placement of dental implants. The Department of Periodontics believes in “commitment to care” at all levels, personal and to others as well as to our physical facilities and to our profession.
Graduate students will interact with other residents and graduate students in the College of Dentistry and OUHSC. Periodontal graduate students will assist in the education of the pre-doctoral students not exceeding the time requirements in the program. A periodontal research component is being built in the department in the areas of clinical and basic sciences research together with other departments in the OU Health Sciences Center. Publications of well documented clinical cases with appropriate review of the literature is encouraged and supported in our program. Graduates of our OU periodontal program are expected to be leaders in the field of periodontics.
