A full-time one-year (or part-time two-year) residency in dental public health is offered to dentists at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester who hold an MPH from an accredited program (check for accreditation at www.ceph.org). International dental graduates are eligible to apply. The dental public health residency is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA); however, the completion of this program does not qualify trainees to become licensed to practice clinically in the state of New York. The program is designed to fulfill the residency requirements of the American Board of Dental Public Health and the core competencies for dental public health professionals. The goal of the New York State Dental Public Health Residency Program is to provide training and practical experience to dentists in a community-based public health program in order to improve the oral health of people in New York State.
The program will:
- provide broad based exposure to dental public health and develop skills to conduct population-based research. The program will provide the Dental Public Health Resident with twelve to twenty-four months of supervised experience to improve the knowledge and skills in the practice of dental public health.
- offer direct experiences in the core content areas of dental public health administration, research methods, oral health promotion and disease prevention, and oral health services delivery systems.
- expose the resident to other areas of importance in the field of dental public health such as the use of computer applications in public health, cultural and behavioral factors in health and disease, clinical preventive dentistry, public health law, and other public health practice issues.
- help understand the development and maintenance of community dental programs and increase the use of preventive dentistry programs.
