The Gerald N. Graser Surgical Implant Fellowship was established in 2002 to honor the legacy of Dr. Gerald N. Graser, the second Chairman of Eastman’s Department of Prosthodontics and a respected leader in prosthodontic education and implant dentistry. The Fellowship was created through the generous support of alumni, friends of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, and leaders from the professional and corporate communities who shared Dr. Graser’s commitment to excellence in education, innovation, and patient care.
The Fellowship is designed to provide advanced surgical education and comprehensive clinical training in dental implantology and the related biological and restorative sciences. The program offers an intensive experience focused on the diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical placement, and maintenance of dental implants, with an emphasis on evidence-based care and interdisciplinary collaboration. Fellows gain experience managing a wide range of clinical situations, from straightforward implant cases to complex multidisciplinary treatment involving hard and soft tissue augmentation, esthetic considerations, and comprehensive rehabilitation planning.
A distinctive component of the Fellowship is its commitment not only to advanced clinical education, but also to the development of future educators and academic leaders. In collaboration with the Warner School of Education, Fellows are introduced to contemporary teaching methodologies, curriculum development, leadership principles, and educational scholarship. This unique integration of surgical implant training and educational development reflects the Fellowship’s mission of preparing clinicians who will contribute meaningfully to both patient care and the advancement of the profession.
Registered by the New York State Department of Education as an Advanced Certificate, the Fellowship provides qualified candidates with a structured and immersive learning environment. Fellows work closely with dual-trained and fellowship-trained faculty members who provide mentorship in clinical care, treatment planning, surgical techniques, research, and professional development. Through close faculty interaction and participation in interdisciplinary care, Fellows develop advanced clinical judgment, technical proficiency, and confidence in managing complex implant cases.
In addition to clinical training, Fellows are strongly encouraged to engage in scholarly and leadership activities. Participation in leadership seminars, professional meetings, research initiatives, and academic presentations is supported and encouraged throughout the program. The Fellowship seeks to cultivate clinicians who are committed to lifelong learning, innovation, and service to the profession. Graduates are encouraged to pursue academic appointments, leadership roles within organized dentistry, and contributions to research and education that will help shape the future of implant dentistry.
