The Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), is located on a downtown campus in Memphis within the College of Dentistry. Post-graduate education consists of direct patient contact, with supervision from full and part-time faculty, research and scholarly activity, and teaching. In-depth instruction is provided in a state-of-the art clinic following an intensive 8 week preclinical course in non-surgical endodontics, retreatment, instrument retrieval, perforation repair and adjunct procedures that encompass endodontic practice. Surgical endodontics is performed as a PGY2 as cases become available. Each resident is provided a dedicated operatory, equipped with an ASI cart with integrated electric motors, ultrasonics, irrigation systems, Stropkos, curing lights, System B, Obtura gun and computers running TDO electronic office software. Kodak 6100 sensors are provided for intraoral radiography, in addition to a Carestream CS 8200 CBCT, dedicated to the Department of Endodontics. JedMed surgical stools provide ergonomics during treatment with visualization through a Zeiss Pico microscope with Varioskop lens (PGY1) or a ProErgo (PGY2). Documentation and intraoral photography and videography is 1080P from all microscopes to a MediCAP USB system and connected directly the resident conference room projection system. A dedicated intraoral digital SLR is available for shared use. Annual clinic utilization fees are assessed in lieu of tuition at $12,750, for clinic maintenance, renting instruments and acquiring new capital items. Individuals are expected to provide their own handpieces. Attachments exist for 5-hole sir-driven turbines and connectors for NSK electric motors. This cost does not include any housing and cost-of-living expenses or other program-related expenses. An annual stipend of $4,000.00 is offered for teaching in the predoctoral program. Post-graduate students are provided with all disposables and a complete set of hand and rotary instruments with which contemporary endodontic treatment can be performed. Variations from the provided instrument sets are costs borne personally by post-graduate students. All residents are involved in an original, independent research project that should display a high level of scholarly intrigue and contribute to the existing foundation of professional knowledge. Research requirements include presentation at a national meeting (Certificate) and a manuscript submitted for publication (MDS only).
