The College of Dentistry offers a postdoctoral program in pediatric dentistry designed to meet the needs of practitioners who wish to specialize in the practrice of dentisty for children. A 24-month certificate and an optional master's degree program commence on July 1 of each year. Completion of the requirements for the MDS (Master of Dental Science) can potentially be completed in 24 months but usually requires an additional 6-months off campus semester. Four new positions are available each year. Successful completion of the program renders the student educationally qualified for specialty examination by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. On completion of a publishable quality research paper and defense of a completed research project, students can receive the Master of Dental Science degree (M.D.S.). The program is university-based and hospital-affiliated.
Invitations for applicant interviews are based on the following criteria: 1) academic background and achievement, 2) extracurricular activities, 3) scholarly activities, and 4) clinical experience. Applicants who plan to enter the program immediately following graduation from dental school, must satisfy these additional criteria: 1) class rank - upper one-third and 2) G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.
The curriculum for this course of study includes core curriculum courses taken with other post-doctoral students and specialty courses taken within the department. The student also receives training in the treatment of non-ambulatory patients under general anesthesia at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. A one-month rotation in general anesthesia, a two-week rotation in pediatric medicine, and a two-week rotation in the emergency department are required. Each student must complete a research project and paper, with data collection and analysis and each project must be presented at a scientific forum, and be suitable for publication. The stipend is $50,000 for the first year and $52,000 for the second. Postdoctoral students receive a tuition waiver; however fees of $800 per semester are required. Fringe benifits include health insurance for the resident, malpractice coverage, one week of vacation a year, University Holidays, and 3 1/2 Personal Days.
Program strenghts: 1) provides excellent integration between clinical and didactic sciences, 2) comprehensive program with many hospital resources, 3) in-depth training in general anesthesia and sedation, and 4) clinical experiences with medically compromised and developmentally disabled children.
