Residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program is approved by the Council of Dental Education of the American Dental Association and, upon satisfactory completion, graduates become eligible for certification examination by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Program Objectives:
- To provide the resident an academic background that meets the requirements for certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery;
- To develop in the resident skills for critical inquiry and assessment needed to provide high quality, ethical, and competent care to patients;
- To develop the diagnostic, patient management, and surgical skills necessary for the pursuit of a career in academics or private practice;
- To provide a teaching and clinical environment that prepares the resident for completion of the certification examination of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery;
- To develop in the resident an attitude of life long learning for continued high quality humane care to the public.
The rotations for trainees during the four-year program include: Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Medicine, Otolaryngology, Cardiology, Plastic Surgery and Trauma Surgery.
Extensive training is obtained in the diagnosis and management of facial fractures, oral maxillofacial infections, benign and malignant lesions of the maxillofacial region, congenital anomalies of the head and neck including clefts, dentofacial deformities, and temporomandibular disorders. Training is also provided in dentoalveolar surgery, maxillofacial reconstruction, anterior alveolar cleft repair, placement of dental implants, and ambulatory anesthesia including IV sedation and general anesthesia.
