The General Practice Residency program at the University of Virginia Health System provides a one-year program, with the option for a second year, aimed at helping trainees deepen their knowledge and broaden the clinical skills they acquired in dental school. Residents will be able to act as competent primary dental care providers, delivering a range of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patients of all ages. Residents will be prepared to manage a wide range of dental conditions and emergencies, diagnosing and managing common dental issues such as acute dental pain, trauma, and infections. Additionally, they will have the skills to direct oral health promotion and disease prevention activities, educating patients about the importance of oral health and helping them maintain healthy habits.
The program was established in 1974 and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Applicants are selected yearly to fill open positions.
