The University of Washington OMS/MD residency program is a 72 month integrated training program with specific curriculum in Clinical Medicine, Anesthesia, Clinical Surgical services, and Clinical Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.  Candidates who MATCH to the UW OMS program are granted advanced standing admission status to the UW School of Medicine MD program effective Winter Quarter following successful completion of OMS Initial Residency Period (IRP) start date.

The Integrated training program curriculum includes:  48 months of OMS Residency Training and 8 academic quarter (24 months) of Medical School (MD3, MD4)

 Upon completion of the 72 month training program, residents will have:

  • Certificate in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
    • 30(+) months of clinical Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
    • 5(+) months of Clinical Anesthesia
    • 2 year Certificate of Completion of General Surgery
    • MD degree conferred by University of Washington School of Medicine

  UW OMS Training Program Requirements for Certification in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery:

  • Satisfactory completion of all assigned OMS and Off-Service clinical rotations
  •  Demonstrate (through RSL) administration of (a minimum of) 300 General Anesthesia/ Deep Sedation Cases; 50 cases must involve care for patients 13 years or younger, and, a minimum of 150 (of the 300) must be ambulatory anesthetic for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery outside of the operating room.
  • Demonstrate (through RSL) at least 175 major OMS cases; at least 20 in each of the major categories (Trauma, Pathology, Orthognathic surgery, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery)
  • Satisfactory completion of all institutional and compliance training, and adherence to all University of Washington Academic and professional conduct requirements.
  • Achieve/complete all OMS residency training major milestones
  • Attendance and participation in all scheduled Tuesday Morning Training Sessions, and Department Grand Rounds, and all other required courses, seminars or professional meetings, as assigned
  • Completion of OMS Research Project (manuscript publication)
  • Successful completion of School of Medicine MD program (Graduation; MD conferred)

UW School of Medicine Graduation Requirements for OMS/MD curriculum track:

OMS Residents are granted advanced standing status with the UW School of Medicine, based on undergraduate and Dental School transcript transfer credits and successful completion of the Medical Student 2nd year OSCE, effective Winter Quarter (January) following the OMS Initial Residency Period (IRP) start date (July1)

OMS/MD program curriculum by year:

  • PGY1: OMS IRP (July-Dec); Med School (Jan-June) MD2/MD3: Q 1 & 2 (of 8)
  • PGY2: Med School MD3/MD4: (July - June)  Q's 3-6 (of 8)
  • PGY3:  Med School-MD4 (July -Dec) Q's  7-8 (of 8); completion of OMS Intern year (Jan-Jun)
  • PGY4: General Surgery- 12 months
  • PGY5: 12 Months OMS, includes 4 month block of  integrated OMS with PED ANES. 
  • PGY6: Chief Year (12 Months OMS)

Transcript Evaluation and Instructions

Offical Dental School Transcript must be included in ADEA PASS application.  Undergraduate School Transcripts are also required (must be at minimum a copy of official transcript). Transcripts printed from a student access portal are not acceptable.

Undergraduate Transcripts:

  • Candidates who Match to the University of Washington OMS Residency Program are eligible for advanced standing admission to the UW School of Medicine MD Program.  (In addition to offical Dental School Transcripts), Undergraduate transcripts are required for consideration by the SOM for Admissions with Advanced Standing status.
  • Applicants can either upload a COPY of Offical Transcript to ADEA PASS application, or, submit official undergraduate transcripts, directly to UW OMS Program Admissions.
