The VA Puget Sound Healthcare System GPR Program accepts 2 residents and participates in the PASS program.
VA PSHCS GPR Program:
The General Practice Residency in Dentistry is a one-year program designed to provide clinical and didactic training in hospital dentistry at the post-doctoral level. This training program will prepare the resident to deliver comprehensive healthcare, by providing clinical and didactic instruction involving ambulatory and hospitalized patients with a wide spectrum of medical conditions. This hospital training program will enable the resident to develop a level of understanding of oral health as an integral part of the overall health status of the patient.
It will also offer the opportunity to work with other healthcare professionals in the hospital and broaden clinical exposure to conditions not commonly seen in the dental school environment. Residents will provide comprehensive care to the veteran patient (including periodontal therapy, oral surgery, restorative care, endodontic treatment, implant procedures and replacement of missing teeth utilizing removable and fixed appliances). Residents will also provide emergent care to patients presenting to the walk-in clinic. Note that there are no opportunities to perform pediatric or orthodontic procedures at our facility.
Features of Our Program:
- Staffed by four full-time general dentists, two part-time general dentists, and six specialty trained dentists (one full-time oral surgeon, two part-time oral surgeons, one full-time prosthodontist, one full-time endodontist, and one part-time periodontist)
- Support from two full-time hygienists, thirteen full-time dental assistants and one full-time removable laboratory technician
- Cone beam CT imaging, CAD/CAM dental software, operating microscope in clinic
- Work closely with our internal VA X-Labs group, which help us create 3-D printed nightguards, surgical guides, removable prostheses, etc.
- Provide consultative services on a regular basis to otolaryngology, radiation therapy, oncology, cardiology, bone marrow transplant, orthopedic, mental health, spinal cord injury, long term care, and primary medical care services
