This is a two-year certificate program is university based with hospital affiliation at WVU Medicine Children's Hospital. Didiactic part is mostly based at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry. Most of the biomedical courses are online lectures that are self-paced. Clinical science courses are offered by various dental and medical multidiscipliniary faculty in formats of seminars and lectures and active resident participation is expected. The overall academic curriculum is designed to prepare residents for successful board certification exams. Clinical experiences will be gained at both at WVU School of Dentistry and at WVU Medicine Children's Hospital. The outpatient clinic at school will be newly renovated state-of-the-art facility and the off-service rotations will be conducted at the newly built Children's Hospital where residents collaborate with various pediatric sub-specialty services to provide comprehensive patient care. Residents will be trained to assume their role as a pediatric dentist in both private clinic and hospital settings. Teaching pre-doctoral students is a part of the program curriculum. All graduating residents will be also required to conduct their own research project and present the research at a professional meeting. Upon completion of the program, residents are awarded a certificate of specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry and will meet the advanced eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

The program in pediatric dentistry is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of "initial accreditation".

Other Requirement Instructions

All residents:

  • Must have earned a DDS or DMD degree from a CODA-accredited US or Canadian dental school.
  • Must have passed Part I and Part II of the National Dental Board Examination or the Integrated National Board Dental Examination prior to the application deadline.
  • Must successfully complete the institution's credentialing process including dental licensure in state of West Virginia.
  • Must submit a current enrollment letter in good standing or certification of any previous post-graduate training if applicable. e.g.: GPR, etc.
