Great Lakes Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) - Residency (Milwaukee/Green Bay, WI)
The Great Lakes Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency is a hospital-based program has been serving veterans and training residents since 1976. Housed in the Historic Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and in the modern Milo C. Huempfner VA Community Outpatient Clinic, the Great Lakes AEGD received its most recent accreditation on August 1st, 2019 by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and was granted the accreditation status of “Approval Without Reporting Requirements”.
The Great Lakes AEGD Residency is a 52-week post-doctorate dental education program designed to facilitate the professional growth of the recent dental graduate. It is intended to mentor competency, proficiency, and confidence in various dental specialties, manage medically compromised dental patients, and help the resident function effectively in hospital-based group practice.
The patient base associated at both sites is second to none. Both facilities provide comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care for our veterans. This vast patient population serves as a tremendous resource for dental patients requiring every dental specialty. As with all Veterans Affairs sponsored programs, patients incur no cost for comprehensive treatment. Thanks to our Veterans Service, our program can deliver comprehensive general practice training that places an emphasis on treatment planning, preventative medicine, and restorative-driven dental therapies. With that said, residents will gain exposure to:
- Periodontal Surgeries (including esthetic/restorative crown lengthening and osseous surgery)
- Advanced Endodontics
- Advanced Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics (including fully guided implant placement and restoration with the aid of ExoCAD and ExoPlan digital workflow)
- Advanced Oral Surgery (including full arch edentulation, alveoloplasty, flap design, and advanced suturing techniques)
- Oral Pathology
- Management of medically compromised patients
Our teaching staff believes that its role is to help each resident achieve clinical competencies and then challenge the resident’s clinical understanding and decision-making capabilities. All training is conducted under the direction and supervision of full-time and part time staff. Attending instructors are educationally qualified and are present during clinic and lecture sessions for consultation.
The Great Lakes Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency enrolls residents at two VA locations. The Clement J. Zablocki VAMC in Milwaukee, WI enrolls three to four AEGD residents and the Milo C. Huempfner VA Health Care Center in Green Bay, WI enrolls two AEGD residents.
Each Resident is afforded:
- Their own operatory to perform multiple aspects of dentistry
- Their own desk and computer in the Doctor’s Office
Each Resident’s Operatory has:
- A dedicated dental assistant to work alongside the Resident
- Digital radiography equipment
- Armamentarium provided for comprehensive treatment:
- Root Canal Therapy
- Fixed & Removeable Prosthodontics
- Direct Restorations
- Oral Surgery
The patients are complex, and the standards are high. It is expected that residents will work efficiently as the needs of our veteran population are extensive, yet the overriding emphasis is on quality, not quantity. The dedicated and energetic resident will find unlimited opportunities to excel, not only clinically, but also through direct resident feedback, we are able to be innovative with our program and improve resident experiences.
Interested candidates are encouraged to visit each training site.
